Roy Panton aka The Mighty Ruler, and the other half of ‘Roy & Yvonne’, talks with me about their new album, ‘Moving On’ which features Teddy Garcia’s Combo. Its out now on Liquidator Music. Roy also talks about the early days in Jamaica when he and Yvonne Harrison started out singing and recording Bluebeat, Ska and Rocksteady. Trace Mamoun Interview: Jamaica’s Alpha Boys School Radio Project (GFR#286)

Greetings musical lovers! The likelihood of you having music by an ex-Alpha Boys School pupil in your musical collection is very high. Notable alumni, all musicians, include: the four founding members of the Skatalites (Tommy McCook, Johnny “Dizzy” Moore, Lester Sterling and Don Drummond), Dizzy Reece, Cedric Brooks, David Madden, Theophilus Beckford, Rico Rodriguez, Yellowman, Vin Gordon. Harold McNair, Joe Harriott, “Deadly” Headley Bennett, Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, the Israel Vibration vocal trio (Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin, Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig, and Cecil “Skeleton” Spence) and Leroy Smart.

Kingston, Jamaica’s legendary Alpha Boys’ School, a school for disadvantaged youth that has been a powerhouse in training reggae musicians, is seeking funding for a radio and music studio and media lab to be constructed on the campus of the historic school in the summer of 2014. I catch up with Trace Mamoun, project manager, to hear how a girl from Paris gets to be in Jamaica helping youth shes never met before and hear all about the ins and outs of the project.
