528 :: Guns of Auckland Ska Fest, Bluesfest, and Beyond (28 November 2018)

Here's a big shout out to the Auckland Ska Festival kicking off this weekend at Galatos 3pm. A special mention here about Atsushi Moisty - he got a big shout out from David Rodigan on BBC Sounds. Here's what Atsushi had to say:

"Oh wow, I have never thought that my song would be played on BBC. This made my day!! David Rodigan played Sound of the Ska (early classic from the Moisties which is also on Rudies All Around compilation - worldwide release). And I have never thought that David Rodigan would complement the recording by comparing to Federal Studios recording of Jamaica. If anyone wants to listen, follow this link, it’s around 1 hour 12ish. I just feel very humble. More life!"

In the mix as well are tracks from more artists just announced for Bluesfest Byron Bay 2019. And a whole lot of tasty tracks to help you ease into the weekend. Enjoy.

#527 :: Trojan Records / Pama Spotlight (21 November 2018)

People that are a part of fandoms love to come up with debates about the superiority of one versus another: Star Wars vs. Star Trek, Marvel vs. DC, and so on. One that I’m surprised I haven’t heard too often from the reggae side of things is Trojan vs Pama. Seeing as they were the two big UK record companies operating in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, it seems only natural that fans of the genre would try to pit them against one another. Since Trojan is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and Pama is celebrating 51 year, we thought we’d put together a mix of tunes released on both labels (and their many subsidiaries)!

TROJAN
Harry J All Stars - Liquidator (Trojan/Harry J)
Joya Landis - Out The Light (Trojan)
The Pioneers - I Need Your Sweet Inspiration (Trojan)
The Maytals - Watermelon (Trojan)

Putumayo Presents :: Ska Around The World (2018)

Putumayo began in 1975 as a Latin American handicraft shop in New York City, by then 23-year old founder Dan Storper. Dan majored in Latin American Studies, and on a trip to Colombia found himself in the Putumayo river valley where he fell in love with the indigenous handicrafts, people, and countryside. The company grew to seven shops and a wholesale business selling international handicrafts and women’s clothing to 600 boutiques.

In 1991, on his return from Indonesia Dan stopped in San Francisco where in Golden Gate Park he happened upon an African band named Kotoja – who was performing upbeat Afro-beat music to a happy, dancing crowd. That chance occurrence led Dan to start the Putumayo World Music record label with his friend Michael Kraus in 1993. For the past 25 years, Putumayo World Music has become known for its joyful compilations of international music, featuring album covers illustrated by British artist Nicola Heindl.

Putumayo has been considered a pioneer in developing the non-traditional market of gift, health food, children’s and other specialty stores as outlets for music. The company’s commitment to helping communities in the countries where the music originates led to the label contributing more than half a million dollars to non-profit organizations around the world.

NEW RELEASE

Ska Around the World

Putumayo is pleased to announce the release of its newest collection, Ska Around the World, on August 31st. Available as a CD, MP3 download and with select tracks for streaming, this collection puts the spotlight on a genre that exploded out of the island of Jamaica and circled the world with its energetic, upbeat rhythms. While also serving as the basis for several significant musical movements including reggae, ska continues to rock fans across the globe.

The party kicks off with Brazil’s Orquestra Brasileira de Música Jamaicana. Canadian Chris Murray follows, singing “Make it hard from the yard inna old time way … Give it to me, we want the real ska,” and the popular Basque group Akatz keeps the party going with their hit “Así Eres Tu.”

As a testament to the roots of ska, Putumayo included legendary Jamaican band The Skatalites with “Glory to the Sound.” As the album demonstrates, ska’s influence has extended far from its country of origin. Listeners will also be treated to the sultry and sweet “IJssalon Bernardo” by Amsterdam trio Zazí and “Duck Soup” by Catalonian group The Pepper Pots.

Ska has a long history of inclusivity and diversity, and the South Indian folk tune “Chanda Mama,” as performed by the global musical project Playing For Change and featuring Israeli singer Tula, is a prime example. Ska is also about having fun and getting down, and horn-lovers won’t be able to get enough of “Buttah (Instrumental)” by the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble.

As the album comes to a close, Algeria-born, West Africa-raised, Montreal-schooled and Ecuador-based artist Sarazino pays tribute to his African roots and Latin American home on the track “Ecos de Radio Iguana.” Finally, the albums wraps up with “Policy of Truth” by the Russia-based St. Petersburg Ska-Jazz Review.

There is no doubt that, despite its small island roots, ska still has global appeal. Ska Around the World will take listeners on a global journey of discovery and demonstrate the influence of this important genre on the music of the world.

#508 :: Tribute to Duncan Campbell aka Mr DC (4 July 2018)

The trouble with trying to list all the many things a person was qualified at, good at, lived, breathed and emanated is that you're bound to miss some important things off the list. This is how I feel as I start to think about what to say about Duncan Campbell. Duncan, or as he was known, Mr DC, died in Auckland hospital after a brief illness on Monday, July 2nd, 2018. I knew him as a meek, humble, generous, passionate, friendly, caring guy who loved reggae music, in fact all Jamaican music.

Duncan was known and loved as a reggae broadcaster on Auckland's 95bFM, reggae and music writer in RipItUp music magazine and as radio news journalist. He was born in Whangarei but grew up in Auckland. Read a NZ Herald obituary here

In this episode I read a wonderful tribute by DJ Dubhead found here, and then play part of an interview Dubhead did with Mr DC for The 95bFM Historical Society. Go here to hear the full interview and some great selections of reggae by Duncan.

It was an absolute honor to have known Duncan. We will miss him for sure. To all his family and friends we send our sincere condolences to you all. God bless you all.

Fosm Ism has shared the following details on Facebook about a service for Duncan:
On behalf of Duncan's family may I just share the following
(and please, share, so that everyone sees it):

It’s been a tough week for the family and friends of Duncan, I’m sure I don’t need to say that. Flailing a bit here. If only Dunc was here to help me write this. If he was, we’d probably have been sidetracked already… anyhoo….

Lots of flying and crying. Many tunes cranked, glasses raised.
Just want to update you all… at Duncan’s request there will be no funeral.

BUT

In a few weeks there will be a PROPER throw down. Duncan’s family know that there is much to celebrate and are very keen that Duncan is given the send off he so deserves. And celebrate we shall. We will be sure to share the details when they are finalised. There will be laughter and tunes... and speeches too. Pretty sure Dunc would approve (but would pretend that he didn’t).

Peace and love

#506 :: Windy City Sound System :: Tribute to Anthony Bourdain (June 25, 1956 – June 8, 2018)

This month's episode of WCSS on GO FEET! Radio is a bit of a personal one.
As you're no doubt well aware, earlier in the month Anthony Bourdain suddenly and unfortunately passed away. To say he was one of my favorite writers and television personalities would be an understatement, and the manner of his passing made the news all that much more shocking and sad. Rather than wax poetic about him or his many accomplishments/impacts, I made like a good selector and pulled together as many Jamaican songs about food and drink as I could fit within an hour. Hopefully this humble remembrance of one of my icons is a fitting one. #502 :: LIVE Recording Wednesday featuring House Of Shem LIVE At Reggae On The River

House Of Shem is an Aotearoa (New Zealand) based harmony trio comprised of Carl Perkins and his two sons Te Omeka Perkins and Isaiah Perkins who are each multi instrumentalist and producers.
It is with much sadness that we bid farewell to Papa Carl Perkins who has died after battling bowel cancer.

The House of Shem guitarist and singer was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in February, 2017 (three days before his 58th birthday) and died on Wednesday May 9, 2018, two weeks after his most recent surgery.

Papa Carl was a true pioneer and champion of reggae music here in Aotearoa. Thank you Sir. God rest your loving soul.

This LIVE Recording Wednesday episode features House of Shem live at Reggae on the River 2016 at French's Camp in Humboldt County, California.
