Two New International Artists Announced
10th Anniversary Event
Pure Reggae Line-up

Bob Marley’s son Julian Marley and Jamaican reggae fusion artist Diana King have joined the pure reggae line-up for Raggamuffin X – the tenth anniversary of New Zealand’s premier reggae festival.

Julian Marley will feature with The Wailers and Family Man performing a 100 per cent Bob Marley set at Raggamuffin X on Saturday 18 February 2017 at The Trusts Arena in Auckland.

Julian and Diana join a staggering line-up of reggae artists for Raggamuffin X. Headlined by crowd pleasers Six60 and reggae icon Shaggy, the tenth anniversary of the festival also features Ky-Mani Marley with Gentleman, 2016 Grammy Award winners Morgan Heritage, and powerhouse Jamaican singer Etana.

Born in 1975, Julian Marley recorded his first song at the Marley home in Kingston, Jamaica at the age of five and released his debut album ‘Uprising’ when he was just 14. He’s worked with reggae veterans including Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett. He collaborated with brothers Stephen and Ziggy and the Ghetto Youths International production team recording at the Marley Music Studio in Kingston where his father created some of his most important and well-known work.

Diana King first performed at Raggamuffin in February this year and was a firm favourite with the crowd performing well-known hits including Shy Guy and Say A Little Prayer. Her debut album ‘Tougher Than Love’ and her follow-up album ‘Think Like A Girl’ were both number 1 Billboard reggae albums in the United States.

Raggamuffin is the largest reggae festival in the Southern Hemisphere. In recent years the festival has included urban and hip hop acts, but for the tenth anniversary it has returned to its reggae roots and sought out top artists to celebrate the milestone.

Alongside Six60, New Zealand bands highlighted at Raggamuffin X include The Black Seeds and Kiwi reggae legends Herbs. Salmonella Dub, House of Shem, Foundation, Common Unity and Lomez Brown with Jamaica’s Conkarah, and Hawaii’s Kiwini and Jah Maoli completing the line-up.

Last year the Raggamuffin Village was expanded to offer more variety and for 2017, a second stage will be in the village offering additional music options.

VIP and VVIP tickets are also available for Raggamuffin X. VIP tickets give concert goers dedicated entry, access to the VIP Chill Deck with dedicated bar and toilet facilities and a seat in the covered grandstand. VVIP tickets provide all the VIP advantages as well as an exclusive VVIP area, $50 pre-loaded AWOP card (valid at all bars and outlets), merchandise shirt and cap, an onstage experience with the Raggamuffin promoter and a side of stage experience during the Festival.

Sharon Lafaye Jones (May 4, 1956 – November 18, 2016) was an American soul and funk singer. She was the lead singer of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, a soul and funk band based in Brooklyn, New York. Jones experienced breakthrough success relatively late in life, releasing her first record when she was 40 years old. In 2014, Jones was nominated for her first Grammy, in the category Best R&B Album, for Give the People What They Want. Among Jones' influences are James Brown, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Thom Bell, Otis Redding, Ike & Tina Turner, Marva Whitney and everyone from Motown. In addition, Jones also cites more recently known artists, such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Erykah Badu and Beyoncé. It was announced on June 3, 2013, that Jones had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer and underwent surgery, which forced her to postpone the release of the group's fifth album, Give the People What They Want. The diagnosis was later changed to stage II pancreatic cancer, for which Jones had surgery on her liver and underwent chemotherapy. The chemotherapy caused hair loss, and for a time she performed bald, refusing to wear wigs.

During the screening of her documentary at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, Jones revealed that her cancer had returned, and that she would be undergoing chemotherapy again. She suffered a stroke whilst watching the 2016 United States presidential election results, blaming Donald Trump, and suffered another stroke the day after the election.

Jones suffered a stroke on election night 2016 and after a second stroke days later died on November 18, 2016 in Cooperstown, New York, aged 60. According to bandmate Gabriel Roth, "She told the people that were [at the hospital] that Trump gave her the stroke. ... She was blaming Trump for the whole thing."

Some artists shine brighter than their contemporaries. Sharon Jones was one of those artists. This is a tribute to one of the finest soul-sisters this side of originators. We miss you already Sharon. Thank you for sharing your soul with us.

RAGGAMUFFIN X Full Line Up Announced

10th Anniversary Event
Pure Reggae Line-up
Saturday 18 February 2017

A pure reggae line-up featuring reggae icon Shaggy, The Wailers feat. Family Man, Ky-Mani Marley, 2016 Grammy Award winners Morgan Heritage and New Zealand’s own stars Six60 is set to take the stage for Raggamuffin X – the tenth anniversary of New Zealand’s premier reggae festival.

Raggamuffin X takes place at The Trusts Arena in Auckland on Saturday 18 February 2017.

Raggamuffin is the largest reggae festival in the Southern Hemisphere. In recent years the festival has included urban and hip hop acts, but for the tenth anniversary it has returned to its reggae roots and sought out top artists to celebrate the milestone birthday.

Headlining Raggamuffin X will be Six60 and Shaggy. Six60 is returning to New Zealand over the summer for a series of gigs, but Raggamuffin X will be the band’s only Auckland performance.

Always a crowd favourite Shaggy returns to celebrate Raggamuffin’s tenth anniversary. Known for his Grammy Award winning album ‘Boombastic’, chart topping hits ‘Boombastic’, ‘It Wasn’t Me’, and ‘Angel’, Shaggy is a multi platinum selling pop reggae legend and one of the most requested acts on Raggamuffin’s Facebook page. Organisers of this year’s festival say he was an absolute first choice for Raggamuffin X.

Raggamuffin X wouldn’t be a reggae party without a Marley in there – and for the tenth anniversary Ky-Mani Marley with Gentleman will be playing, plus The Wailers featuring Family Man will keep the Marley vibes alive.

The ‘Royal Family’ of reggae, Morgan Heritage were crowd pleasers at Raggamuffin VII and return for the festival’s tenth anniversary concert on the back of their 2016 Grammy Award winning album (best reggae album) ‘Strictly Roots’.

Jamaican-born singer Etana has established herself as one of the most powerful and distinctive female voices in reggae. A hit at Raggamuffin VIII, she’s returning to please the crowds at Raggamuffin X.

Alongside Six60, New Zealand bands highlighted at Raggamuffin X include crowd pleasers The BlackSeeds and Kiwi reggae legends Herbs. Salmonella Dub, House of Shem, Lomez Brown, Jamaica’s Conkarah, and Hawaii’s Kiwini and Jah Maoli complete the full line-up for the main stage.

Last year the Raggamuffin Village was expanded to offer more variety and for 2017, a second stage will be in the village offering additional music options including New Zealand bands Foundation and Common Unity, along with DJ Al’Goodie

Tickets for Raggamuffin X are on pre-sale from 9am today and on General Public sale from Tuesday 25 October. VVIP, VIP and GA tickets are available and Raggamuffin X is R18. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster 0800 111 999 www.ticketmaster.co.nz with a lay-by option available from Tuesday 25 October, and Red Rat clothing stores.
