FINAL RAGGAMUFFIN MUSIC FESTIVAL :: AN END OF AN ERA

In a bittersweet announcement today, Andrew McManus, the creator and driving force behind New Zealand’s iconic Raggamuffin Music Festival has said that Raggamuffin X, the tenth anniversary of the much-loved people’s festival, will be the final festival in Auckland at The Trusts Arena on Saturday 18 February 2017.

Having commenced in Rotorua in 2008, Raggamuffin captured the imagination of not just New Zealanders but international visitors who have travelled year in year out to enjoy some of the world’s biggest reggae stars including the inaugural line-up of UB40 (full band) Maxi Priest, The Wailers and Arrested Development. The festival has since featured other luminaries including Miss Lauryn Hill, Billy Ocean, Damian, Stephen and Ziggy Marley, Eddy Grant, Jimmy Cliff, Mary J Blige and Ali Campbell.

In making today’s statement McManus said Raggamuffin found its home in New Zealand 10 years ago, filling a major hole in the reggae landscape. “Along with Ali and the other original members of UB40 we all thought it would be a great idea to start a purpose-built reggae festival and the result was the birth of Raggamuffin. The culture and peaceful vibes of the Kiwi people ensured New Zealand was the obvious place to start and home Raggamuffin.”

McManus added that Raggamuffin has been an amazing journey and he was proud it had been an iconic part of New Zealand’s summers for so many years. But, he said, all good things must come to an end and this year’s Raggamuffin Festival will be a celebration of 10 years of love, peace and harmony – the mantra of Raggamuffin which has seen so many great moments and people grace the stage, internationally and locally.

“Let’s all come together and farewell this piece of New Zealand music history, celebrate what has been an amazing 10 years and enjoy the massive line up of reggae royalty from local superstars Six60, The Black Seeds and House of Shem to international icons including Shaggy, Diana King, The Wailers with Julian Marley playing a full tribute to Bob Marley, Ky-Mani Marley and many more!”

A pure reggae line-up featuring reggae icon Shaggy, The Wailers feat. Family Man, Ky-Mani Marley, 2016 Grammy Award winners Morgan Heritage and New Zealand’s own stars Six60 is set to take the stage for Raggamuffin X – the tenth anniversary of New Zealand’s premier reggae festival.

Raggamuffin X takes place at The Trusts Arena in Auckland on Saturday 18 February 2017.

Raggamuffin is the largest reggae festival in the Southern Hemisphere. In recent years the festival has included urban and hip hop acts, but for the tenth anniversary it has returned to its reggae roots and sought out top artists to celebrate the milestone birthday.

Headlining Raggamuffin X will be Six60 and Shaggy. Six60 is returning to New Zealand over the summer for a series of gigs, but Raggamuffin X will be the band’s only Auckland performance.

Always a crowd favourite Shaggy returns to celebrate Raggamuffin’s tenth anniversary. Known for his Grammy Award winning album ‘Boombastic’, chart topping hits ‘Boombastic’, ‘It Wasn’t Me’, and ‘Angel’, Shaggy is a multi platinum selling pop reggae legend and one of the most requested acts on Raggamuffin’s Facebook page. Organisers of this year’s festival say he was an absolute first choice for Raggamuffin X.

Raggamuffin X wouldn’t be a reggae party without a Marley in there – and for the tenth anniversary Ky-Mani Marley with Gentleman will be playing, plus The Wailers featuring Family Man will keep the Marley vibes alive.

The ‘Royal Family’ of reggae, Morgan Heritage were crowd pleasers at Raggamuffin VII and return for the festival’s tenth anniversary concert on the back of their 2016 Grammy Award winning album (best reggae album) ‘Strictly Roots’.

Jamaican-born singer Etana has established herself as one of the most powerful and distinctive female voices in reggae. A hit at Raggamuffin VIII, she’s returning to please the crowds at Raggamuffin X.

Alongside Six60, New Zealand bands highlighted at Raggamuffin X include crowd pleasers The BlackSeeds and Kiwi reggae legends Herbs. Salmonella Dub, House of Shem, Lomez Brown, Jamaica’s Conkarah, and Hawaii’s Kiwini and Jah Maoli complete the full line-up for the main stage.

Last year the Raggamuffin Village was expanded to offer more variety and for 2017, a second stage will be in the village offering additional music options including New Zealand bands Foundation and Common Unity, along with DJ Al’Goodie

Tickets for Raggamuffin X are on pre-sale from 9am today and on General Public sale from Tuesday 25 October. VVIP, VIP and GA tickets are available and Raggamuffin X is R18. If you ever wanted to know what New Zealander’s dig when it come to Roots/Sunshine Reggae then Three Houses Down are all you need to hear. The band consists of 10 members, brothers of Tongan ancestry.

Nate catches up with Robert Pome’e, band leader, (thanks to Affro Mama for the hook up). He talks about the band’s new album called BREAKOUT and their upcoming tour. He also shares many interesting insights to many of the new songs on the album. The band state as their influences: Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear, Alpha Blondie, Lucky Dube, UB40, Morgan Heritage, Tigilau Ness.
