#565 :: Windy City Sound System 20 :: Authentic Jamaican Ska (21 August 2019)

This week: Jim Cascino serves up an all Jamaican, 100% authentic, classic Ska mix.

For one reason or another, I always find myself listening to a lot more ska during the summertime than any other season. Seeing as we’re smack dab in the middle of summer here in the States, that’s a good enough reason to put a spotlight on the genre for the next couple episodes! Next month, we’ll highlight some of the outstanding contemporary ska that’s out there; but for this month, it’s 100% classics. Included within are some of my absolute favorite 1960s ska tunes, that perfectly encapsulate the sound of a young, newly independent Jamaica! ~Jim

#560 :: Windy City Sound System 19 :: Early 60's (17 July 2019)

In the early days of the Jamaican recording industry, the bands and artists primarily tried to emulate the rhythm & blues music released in the US during the 1950s. This led to a slew of fantastic R&B, jump blues, doo-wop, and ballads that were released in the early ‘60s; and even when ska, rocksteady, and reggae came to dominate the island, some artists even put out some soul sides. For this month’s edition of the show, we’ve put together a mix of these types of tunes. We’re only scratching the surface here, so expect more episodes like this in the future!

#556 :: Windy City Sound System 18 :: 2019 Highlights ... so far (19 June 2019)

It’s hard to believe, but we’re already halfway through 2019. As has been the case for the last couple years, there has been a wealth of new ska, rocksteady, and reggae music that has been released! Rather than wait until the end of the year, we wanted to pick some choice cuts off albums released during the first half of the year, which have been on repeat here at WCSS HQ. Big ups to all of these artists, and here’s to hoping the remainder of the year is just as prolific with new music! ~Jim
