Roy Panton aka The Mighty Ruler, and the other half of ‘Roy & Yvonne’, talks with me about their new album, ‘Moving On’ which features Teddy Garcia’s Combo. Its out now on Liquidator Music. Roy also talks about the early days in Jamaica when he and Yvonne Harrison started out singing and recording Bluebeat, Ska and Rocksteady. Greetings musical lovers! The likelihood of you having music by an ex-Alpha Boys School pupil in your musical collection is very high. Notable alumni, all musicians, include: the four founding members of the Skatalites (Tommy McCook, Johnny “Dizzy” Moore, Lester Sterling and Don Drummond), Dizzy Reece, Cedric Brooks, David Madden, Theophilus Beckford, Rico Rodriguez, Yellowman, Vin Gordon. Harold McNair, Joe Harriott, “Deadly” Headley Bennett, Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, the Israel Vibration vocal trio (Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin, Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig, and Cecil “Skeleton” Spence) and Leroy Smart.

Kingston, Jamaica’s legendary Alpha Boys’ School, a school for disadvantaged youth that has been a powerhouse in training reggae musicians, is seeking funding for a radio and music studio and media lab to be constructed on the campus of the historic school in the summer of 2014. I catch up with Trace Mamoun, project manager, to hear how a girl from Paris gets to be in Jamaica helping youth shes never met before and hear all about the ins and outs of the project. Jamaican legend Roy Panton aka The Mighty Ruler joins me on this episode of GO FEET! Radio for the first of a two-part series. From Toronto, Canada, where he and his wife, Yvonne Harrison of ‘Roy and Yvonne‘, have made their home since Roy left Jamaica in 1972. Roy was one of the first in Jamaican to be recorded as a singing duo and he tells all about this time. Interview with Nicky Bomba of Bustamento and Melbourne Ska Orchestra [GFR#281]


Hey everyone! Nicky Bomba returns to New Zealand this weekend (15-16th Feb 14) – this time with Bustamento AND Melbourne Ska Orchestra and wait, theres more, he’s bringing them right to my backdoor step in Hamilton! Both bands will be performing as part of the annual Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival happening from 14-27 February 2014. 

Nicky’s uptempo dance-along bands are sure to be crowd pleasers, and I’m really keen to be a part of it. On Saturday 15th from 10pm at the Rogers Rose Gardens (and for only $20!) The Southern Diplomats (with me on harmonica) will open for Nicky Bomba’s Bustamento. Then on Sunday 16th from 7.30pm on the Rhododendron Lawn an explosive demonstration of music will unfold as the Melbourne Ska Orchestra hits the stage. This will only cost music lovers $39 or $10 for 5-14 year olds. 

These two nights of high energy and fun are not to be missed. Nicky shares his excitement about returning to New Zealand during this episode plus a few insights into what makes up his varied musical tastes and career. Enjoy!
