#568 :: Windy City Sound System 21 :: This Is Modern Ska! (11 Sept 2019)

Here’s Part 2 to our episode last month, which is featuring strictly ska music. After 50+ years in existence, the genre has gone through a number of “waves” of popularity, and the sound has evolved and fused with others in ways that the Jamaican originators wouldn’t have ever imagined. We could probably put together another handful of episodes to include all these iterations, but seeing as we’re nearing the end of the decade, we wanted to look back at the last ten years worth of ska music. Within this episode you’ll find both some of my favorite tunes from the last decade, as well as some other ones that I think have flown under the radar, proving that the genre is still alive, well, and positively thriving even to this day!

#567 :: GO FEET! Radio counts down to the last episode (5 Sept 2019)

Hey everyone, after a lot of thought I've finally decided to call it a day and finish up GO FEET! Radio on FreeFM before the end of September. It wasn't an easy decision but some of my priorities have changed and the timing it right. It's been one of the best musical rides I've had and there's so many people to thank. Like Phil Grey and Mike Williams of FreeFM, and the many co-hosts over the years including Jim Cascino of Windy City Soundsystem, Leonardo Corso aka Leo Dub, Vic Summerfield aka DJ Skin & Bone, Meshell Rhianwen aka Miss Steady, and Allen aka DJ Nattymouse to name a few.

To all the bands and artists, the music distributors, and the festival promoters, there's so many people that have helped support GO FEET! Radio over the years. And thanks to Steve Kitchen of Combination13.com for designing our show logo. But most of all, I thank all the listeners that have tuned in, bought tee shirts, shared my show links and cheered me on. Thank you.

So, you may be 'wondering now, what to do, now you know this is the end'. There is some interest in keeping a Ska / Reggae show going on FreeFM and if you're keen to do this let me know asap and I'll link you with the right people to help you make it happen.

In this episode I reminisce about some of the interviews I've done over the years with some of the coolest people. There's way more interviews than whats mentioned here, this is juts the tip of the iceberg. Enjoy!

Symarip (Roy Ellis) - Skinhead Moonstomp
The Beat (Dave Wakeling) - Tears Of A Clown
The Upsessions (Boss van Trigt) - What If These Tears

#565 :: Windy City Sound System 20 :: Authentic Jamaican Ska (21 August 2019)

This week: Jim Cascino serves up an all Jamaican, 100% authentic, classic Ska mix.

For one reason or another, I always find myself listening to a lot more ska during the summertime than any other season. Seeing as we’re smack dab in the middle of summer here in the States, that’s a good enough reason to put a spotlight on the genre for the next couple episodes! Next month, we’ll highlight some of the outstanding contemporary ska that’s out there; but for this month, it’s 100% classics. Included within are some of my absolute favorite 1960s ska tunes, that perfectly encapsulate the sound of a young, newly independent Jamaica! ~Jim

#560 :: Windy City Sound System 19 :: Early 60's (17 July 2019)

In the early days of the Jamaican recording industry, the bands and artists primarily tried to emulate the rhythm & blues music released in the US during the 1950s. This led to a slew of fantastic R&B, jump blues, doo-wop, and ballads that were released in the early ‘60s; and even when ska, rocksteady, and reggae came to dominate the island, some artists even put out some soul sides. For this month’s edition of the show, we’ve put together a mix of these types of tunes. We’re only scratching the surface here, so expect more episodes like this in the future!

#545 :: LIVE Recording Wednesday 27th March 2019 :: The Scofflaws, LIVE Vol.1 (1996)

A great live recording from a Huntington, Long Island, New York-based third wave ska band that debuted in 1988 called the Scofflaws.

The Scofflaws early sound was characterized by strong R&B and jazz influences as well as eclectic covers of such songs as Henry Mancini's "A Shot in the Dark", Danny Elfman's theme for Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and a scorching live rendition of The Skatalites instrumental "Ska-La Parisian". Original songs like "Ska-La-Carte", "Nude Beach" and "William Shatner" became cult favorites due to the offbeat lyrics and quirky vocal stylings of bandleader Richard "Sammy" Brooks and trombonist Buford O'Sullivan.

They toured the United States several times, including stints as the openers for Desmond Dekker and Bad Manners. In addition, they toured Europe in 1998 supporting Laurel Aitken & The New York Ska Jazz Ensemble.

Although The Scofflaws have not released a studio recording since 1998, Brooks continues to lead the band in live performances within the New York area.

#541 :: LIVE Recording Wednesday :: Ernest Ranglin LIVE At Reggae On The River (27 February 2019)

Ernest Ranglin, one of Jamaica's architects of both the ska and reggae sounds, and one of the island's most frequently-recorded session musicians, has actually been playing and recording for over 50 years now, and looks so good for his age. His playing has gotten stronger as he has gotten older. 'Ska Wey Dat is a two-disc set of jazzy ska and reggae guitar which showcases Ranglin's skill. The first disc consists of the relatively slick and commercial-sounding E.B. @ Noon, which was originally issued in an extremely limited release in 1999, and is here reissued under the title Ska Wey Dat; the second disc is a previously unreleased live set from the 1998 Reggae on the River festival in California, on which Ranglin fronts Floyd Lloyd's Ska Band. I have selected nine tracks from this second disc to feature in this episode of LIVE Recording Wednesday here on GO FEET! Radio. The live disc is a rough-and-ready romp through old-school ska and reggae tunes like "Satta Massagana" (which is given an insightful and lovely instrumental treatment). Enjoy.

#540 :: Windy City Sound System #14 :: An All-Instrumental Affair (20 February 2019)

This is one episode that’s been in the works for quite some time, but I’ve never actually followed through with making: an all-instrumental affair! As with our usual mixes, we’ve tried to strike a good balance between classic and contemporary, as well as genres. Hopefully, the musicians’ talent shine through here, as there’s some blinding skill featured throughout. So, for all of the instrumentalists out there who don’t get their just dues, this one is for you all! ~ Jim Cascino
