Interview with Nicky Bomba of Bustamento and Melbourne Ska Orchestra [GFR#281]

Hey everyone! Nicky Bomba returns to New Zealand this weekend (15-16th Feb 14) – this time with Bustamento AND Melbourne Ska Orchestra and wait, theres more, he’s bringing them right to my backdoor step in Hamilton! Both bands will be performing as part of the annual Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival happening from 14-27 February 2014. 

Nicky’s uptempo dance-along bands are sure to be crowd pleasers, and I’m really keen to be a part of it. On Saturday 15th from 10pm at the Rogers Rose Gardens (and for only $20!) The Southern Diplomats (with me on harmonica) will open for Nicky Bomba’s Bustamento. Then on Sunday 16th from 7.30pm on the Rhododendron Lawn an explosive demonstration of music will unfold as the Melbourne Ska Orchestra hits the stage. This will only cost music lovers $39 or $10 for 5-14 year olds. 

These two nights of high energy and fun are not to be missed. Nicky shares his excitement about returning to New Zealand during this episode plus a few insights into what makes up his varied musical tastes and career. Enjoy!

Michael G of Easy Star Allstars talks Thrillah on GO FEET! Radio # 207

It was quite a fluke how I managed to get an interview with Michael Goldwasser aka Michael G of Easy Star Allstars. Heres how it all happened.

I went looking online for any interviews with Michael G and found that Roifield Brown had recently interviewed Michael G on How Jamaica Conquered The World. I asked Roifield if I could use his interview on GO FEET! Radio as I was set to play Thrillah this week and was pushed for time to chase up an interview. Roifield came back to me with Michael’s contact details. To my surprise Michael was super keen to be interviewed LIVE to air, even though it would be 7am for him in New York!

Michael is the mastermind behind a unique musical genre – taking classic albums and re-imagining them as reggae. His production Dub Side of the Moon, a reggae version of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, is one of the best-selling independent reggae releases of 21st Century, and has been praised by Pink Floyd guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour himself. Likewise, the members of Radiohead are all fans of his album Radiodread, a reggae version of their classic OK Computer. His album, Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band is an adaptation of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album, and it not only held the #1 spot on the Billboard Reggae Chart upon release, but it was the first reggae album to crack the Billboard Top 200 in over two years. In August 2012, Michael’s latest production was released – Easy Star’s Thrillah, a complete reggae version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. I’ve been a lover of Rockabilly music longer than I’ve been a fan of ska nd reggae. Thanks to my Dad who played records on a small player I came to hear some scorchin’ Rock n’ Roll, Jazz n’ Blues, and of course some Rockabilly. I’ve selected some great cuts from well known artists of yesteryear as well as some of my favorite artists on the scene today. And to end this episode theres a punk rockin’ tribute to my all-time favorite modern Rockabilly band, The Stray Cats, from some great punk bands. BIOGRAPHY
Los Angeles born and raised Roger was surrounded by music . His father Roger Rivas Sr. was a crucial part in the "Brown Sound" of East L.A playing keyboards for the legendary group known as Tierra. At a very young age Roger Jr would be introduced to many musicians in the Los Angeles circuit. Members from WAR, Malo, El Chicano, Thee Midnigters and more. Much of Roger Jrs musical taste is owed to his father. A big testament to this was his introduction to L.A oldies. Roger quotes saying: " That whole L.A oldie sound shares so much with Jamaican music. Any lover of The Techniques is gonna easily love Sly,Slick, and Wicked. Any lover of Gene Chandler is gonna dig Alton Ellis ."

Over the years Roger has shared the stage with many Jamaican legends including: Leonard Dillion, Rico Rodriguez, Roy Ellis, Alton Ellis, Pat Kelly, Derrick Morgan, and Prince Buster. His love for Reggae can be seen here with these versions. "Jackie Mittoo and Winston Wright, man those are my guys! There were tons of great organ and piano players in the reggae, but those 2 guys were consistently on top of their tune!

Roger is a founding member of The Aggrolites and tours with them constantly. "Its really great to see the love for Skinhead Reggae all over the world. This music will never die" Recently Roger formed a group called The Bullets. The Bullets pay respect to the L.A Jamaican connection. "Its an All-Star band in a sense that everyone has payed their dues and has played music for so long. Its really hard to gather a group of guys that are all on the same page. I am a lucky mug! Funnest time I have ever had playing music!"

Roger released Organ Versions Vol.1 and received so much positive feedback that its time for another 5 shots of reggae. "This time around I got to sit with some collectors and DJs I really admire. Mark Morales from L.A is the reggae teacher. Always bringing out tunes never before heard! Jurassic sound is like no other! Brazil meets Jamaica! " Sit back and turn the music up!
